Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, has asserted that Arab Spring revolutions have been part of a larger plot by the west to divide these countries in a bid to recolonize them.
“The Arab Spring revolutions have carried some benefits for some Arab countries. Yet, some of these revolutions were part of a larger plot to divide other countries,” el-Tayeb, who holds the highest seat of religious learning in the Sunni world, told El-Hayat El-Youm program on Sunday, May 11, Al-Arham newspaper reported.
Arguing for his theory, he added that, “fully-armed American forces were deployed in Iraq and only withdraw after Iraq’s destruction.”
El-Tayeb was speaking in his first televised interview since July 3rd army move to topple President Mohamed Morsi. Addressing the privately-owned TV station, el-Tayeb confirmed that western politicians have shown their true colors against the Islamic civilization.
He lamented that the West considers its relationship with the East as a one of war, rather than integration and harmony.
“The West has invented incorrect theories to be able to control the treasures of the East, ignoring the fact that science should be a mutual human benefit,” el-Tayeb said.
“Till now, the west has not met with the east, where a widening gap has been growing though Al-Azhar scholars have predicted the possibility, if not the necessity, of meeting between the east and the west since the renaissance.
The Arab spring started in 2011 with mass protests in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Libya and Syria.
In only two countries, Egypt and Tunisia, peaceful protests succeeded in kicking out former presidents Mubarak and Ben Ali. Later on, Libyans managed to topple and later kill Muammar Gaddafi.
Three years on its inception in Egypt, the country’s first democratically elected president Morsi was toppled last July by the former defense minister following protests against his regime.
The situation was not any better in other countries where a Syrian civil war has forced hundreds of thousands to escape their homeland as refugees in neighboring countries.
