Al-Azhar Al-Sharif has strongly condemned the shooting to death of the Al-Furqan Mosque Imam and his assistant in New York on Saturday.

In a statement released yesterday, Al-Azhar said, "Killing innocent people is prohibited in all religions and refused by all laws, norms and international covenants, regardless of one’s faith, colour or race."

Al-Azhar called for the protection of all places of worship to preserve their inviolability against any attack, and stressed that such criminal acts incite troubles and racial and religious hatred, "which are a breeding ground for terrorism to spread chaos and achieve destructive agendas".
